What is Mindfulness?

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” ― Marcel Proust

Mindfulness is a quality that every human being already possesses

Mindfulness is all about present moment awareness without judgement.

Did you know that we spend much of our time on autopilot, missing present moment experience, and this limits our ability to enjoy life to its fullest potential? Our attention is often pulled away by difficult thoughts and feelings relating to the past and concerning the future.

Mindfulness practice can help us to recognise that we are becoming entangled in our thoughts and feelings, living predominantly in our heads and separated from the wisdom of the body. The practice of mindfulness enables us to gently redirect our attention to present moment experience so we can make wiser and more skilful choices about our next steps.

The Definition of Mindfulness

John Kabat Zinn, one of the founding fathers of western approaches to mindfulness interventions defines mindfulness as:

‘Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally.’

Mindfulness is a quality that every human being already possesses, it’s not something you have to conjure up, you just have to learn how to access it and develop your capacity.

Mindfulness has a strong evidence base and has been shown to be particularly effective for those living with pain and difficulty arising from physical health conditions and people experiencing stress, anxiety and depression.

Anyone can experience the proven benefits of mindfulness practice in terms of feeling more able to cope with life, periods of stress, and difficulty — and enabling themselves to see more fully the joy and beauty of life.

I deliver a variety of workshops, retreats and bespoke courses around Mindfulness, and self-compassion.

About Kirsty

I am an experienced and award-winning mental health trainer, coach and mindfulness and self-compassion facilitator.

I have a particular interest in self-compassion approaches to help manage anxiety in times of uncertainty and relate to ourselves more helpfully during difficulty, and I am currently studying an MSc in Mindfulness and Compassion approaches.

"The Strategic Enabling Team (SET) recently took part in the Mental Health First Aid Half Day course.

The course provided a very helpful overview of mental health and highlighted key topics such as how to approach someone, signposting and how both managers and employees can cope in a pressurised working environment.

Content was relevant and enjoyable and delivered in a professional and sensitive manner by the instructor. Toolkits and supporting booklets will certainly be a useful reference point. An excellent course!"
